SMASHED POTATOES

one of my favorite things, especially when i was pregnant, were potatoes...fried, mashed, baked...so many options! one of the easiest side dishes i found were these little smash potatoes. instructions are: boil, smash, season, bake...wah-la! what's great about these is that the good-for-you skin gets crisp and they're totally customizable. i like them simple with rosemary, salt, and pepper. i also love using the trader joe's medley of small potatoes, which include red, gold, & purple. CHICKEN PICCATA & LEMON BRUSSEL SPROUTS

one of my favorite notes in food is sour, usually from lemons. a dish that i think really captures this flavor profile is chicken piccata. i love this and it's incredibly easy to make. the added bonus for me are the capers, which add to the sour note. it seems like there are ways to adjust this recipe by either using white wine and/or garlic, which i may experiment with, especially since i just prepared a julia child's moules a la mariniere recipe that called for these ingredients and it was super delicious (post to follow)! the other, very trendy side i wanted were lemon brussel sprouts. i've had and loved brussels with bacon, but to keep with the lemony theme, i found this extremely delicious recipe! it calls to add cheese, but i was fine without it. these combined may be too much of the same for some, but it is what i considered a perfect homemade meal. GRANDMA BETTY'S POTATO SALAD

who is grandma betty? she is my husband's grandmother and the sweetest woman ever. the first time i tried her potato salad recipe, i was hooked and was literally going back specifically for it alone. what i like about it the most is the crunch from the celery and red onions, but what makes it stand out is the secret ingredient of ranch dressing. this is a fairly easy recipe to make and i think it's worth a try for your next bbq! GRANDMA BETTY'S POTATO SALAD 12-15 red potatoes 5 hard-boiled eggs 3/4 c mayo 1 packet of dry ranch seasoning mix 1 c chopped celery 1/2 c chopped red onions 1/4 c water salt & pepper to taste boil potatoes until fork tender. drain and let cool for 30 mins. then, peel and dice. set aside. dice *hard-boiled eggs and set aside. in a medium bowl, mix mayo, ranch mix, celery, onions, and water. gently add potatoes and eggs. try not to mash potatoes. my yummy tip: how to *hard boil eggs - cover eggs with water. bring to a boil and c...

BAKED MACARONI & CHEESE

on our NYC FOODAPOLOOZA , one of our stops was dumont burger , where we went specifically for the mac & cheese. this little brooklyn joint had one of the best offerings of mac & cheese i'd ever had (the best still belongs to home ). so, what does that lead me to do? search online for a recipe worthy of thanksgiving. i looked up "dumont burger macaroni & cheese recipe" and was directed to a food blog that attempted to recreate this signature dish. so, how'd it measure up? we all agreed that it was good, but i knew it wasn't quite dumont-approved. but, give it a go...it's still delicious! BAKED MACARONI & CHEESE posted on grace notes nyc by grace g. yang on november 20, 2009 16oz elbow macaroni (i used rotini, i've always liked how it holds the cheese) 4c small curd cottage cheese (two 16oz tubs) 2c sour cream 16oz block sharp cheddar cheese 1 handful of trader joe's quattro formaggio (blend of asiago, provolone, & parmesan...

PUMPKIN BISCUITS WITH ORANGE-HONEY BUTTER

this was one of my favorite results from thanksgiving. the biscuits had a nice, subtle sweetness from the pumpkin ad spices and the orange-honey butter pulled it all together. i would make this for any fall get-together. they're easy to make, but are impressive. CHRISTMAS EVE FEAST

this was the first year we didn't have any family obligations for christmas eve, which was kind of nice. of course, the next day and the day after were going to be filled with family love, but having one night to celebrate the holidays with just us two (and the furry kids) was very special. so, how do we celebrate? with a feast! i fully enjoyed the ambition menu for thanksgiving and wanted to do a slightly smaller menu for christmas eve...and, it all began with a mail order from the honeybaked ham store. the rest of the menu planning was really for decoration, but i enjoyed it very much. in addition to classic garlic mashed potatoes , our feast included: GREEN BEANS WITH BACON VINAIGRETTE i remember finding this recipe and thinking, "everything truly is better with bacon". i really do love green beans, even if they're jus steamed, but the idea of turning bacon into a vinaigrette sounded amazing...and it was! posted on real simple by kate merker & sarah q...
